I have a Garden
On March 29th we started working on our dream garden. We had a little garden in the ground years ago, but this area in our yard has no irrigation and is basically a crabgrass wasteland.
We cleared the crabgrass with a weed-eater (thank you, Casey!) and mapped out where we wanted the garden. We decided to build a fence because I wanted the garden to have its own formal space and I want to protect the plants from Dottie and other visiting fur-friends. Pedar built the garden fence, the boxes and dug trenches for the irrigation. We made multiple trips to Tractor Supply for huge rolls of hog wire - I got really good at using bolt cutters! I called a local tree trimming company and had them bring over an entire load of bark. The bark had a ton of mold, so we wore respirators when we moved it to keep our lungs and sinuses healthy. I was OK, but Pedar did develop a cough and sinus troubles.
We finished the garden on May 30th! We have veggies in! We are growing tomatoes, squash, peppers, corn, watermelon, beans, tomatillo’s and more. We had extra pavers from the pool project so we built a short path to the gate, we have enough to keep going with the path through the center. We will place larger square pavers around the outside of the boxes to help prevent the space from becoming muddy in the winter. I want to plant a potato vine on the two corners, same side as the gate, to grow all around the fence. We still have bark to move and we plan on putting the rest behind the pool gate. We just made the area we have to mow so much smaller and I am so grateful!! This is the best 19th wedding anniversary and birthday gift ever.
We are reading the Gardenary’s new book, “Kitchen Garden Revival,” and we are learning so much! We are going to make one more garden box for a small herb garden closer to the house.
This was the garden Pedar and Kealii built at our first house.
